About

Gladys Hilda Barbara Kate Henson, born Gladys Gunn on 27 September 1897 at 4 St Stephen's Green, Dublin, Ireland, was an Irish actress whose career spanned stage, radio, film, and television from 1932 to 1976. She was the daughter of John Gunn, director of the Gaiety Theatre, and Hilda Killock. In 1926, she married English actor Leslie Henson. She died in London on 21 December 1982 at the age of 85.

Henson's Broadway career ran from 1933 to 1950 and encompassed several productions. Her stage work included Noël Coward's Design for Living, in which she appeared at its 1932 Broadway premiere, and Coward's Set to Music in 1939. Additional Broadway credits included George and Margaret, Point Valaine, and The Curious Savage.

Following her divorce from Leslie Henson, she became a prominent presence in British post-war cinema. Among her most notable film appearances were The History of Mr Polly in 1949 and The Blue Lamp in 1950. She frequently appeared alongside actor Jack Warner, playing his wife in Train of Events, The Captive Heart, and The Blue Lamp. In The Blue Lamp, the scene in which her character receives news of her husband's death was described as a masterpiece of understated emotion, moving without falling into sentimentality.
