About
Gladys Coburn was an American actress who worked across both stage and silent film during the early twentieth century. Born on August 22, 1893, in Arkansas, she spent much of her life in New Castle, Indiana, and built a career that spanned theatrical productions and motion pictures before her death in January 1969 at the age of 75.
Coburn's Broadway career ran from 1917 to 1925 and encompassed a range of formats, from revues to plays to musicals. Among her stage credits were two revues: Miss 1917 and the Ziegfeld Follies of 1918. She also appeared in the musical Annie Dear and in the plays The Clouds and Lucky Sam McCarver.
Concurrent with her stage work, Coburn established herself as a presence in silent film. She took on starring roles in The Primitive Call in 1917, playing Betty Malcolm, and in Heart Strings in 1920, in which she portrayed Kathleen Noyes. Her screen work extended to additional films across that period, including Madame X, in which she played Helene; The Firing Line, where she appeared as Jessie Bradley; Voices, in which she portrayed Marion Lord; Out of the Snows; The Fatal Hour, in which she played Dorothy Gore; God's Crucible, where she appeared as Marjorie Menzies; and The Battle of Life.
