About

Gilberto Santa Rosa Cortés was born on August 21, 1962, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and is known professionally by the nickname "El Caballero de la Salsa" — The Gentleman of Salsa. A singer and bandleader specializing in salsa and bolero, he has sold over three million records in the United States and Puerto Rico and holds six Grammy Awards. He appeared on Broadway in 2013 in Forever Tango.

Santa Rosa's musical education began in Santurce, where he completed his primary and secondary schooling. As a teenager he performed in his first concert, and in 1976 he made his recording debut as a backup singer with the Mario Ortiz Orchestra. He subsequently joined La Grande Orchestra as lead singer, remaining for two years, during which time he worked with Elias Lopez, who helped shape his development as a vocalist.

Throughout the 1980s, Santa Rosa recorded with several ensembles, including the Tommy Olivencia Orchestra and the Willie Rosario Orchestra. He also recorded Homenaje a Eddie Palmieri with the Puerto Rican All Stars. During this period he developed a distinctive approach to "soneo," the improvisational element of salsa, which allowed him to work effectively in both the tropical and romantic styles of the genre. In 1986, he formed his own band and signed with Combo Records, releasing a series of hits that included "Good Vibrations," "De amor y salsa," "Punto de vista," "Vivir sin ella," and "Perspectiva."

Santa Rosa became the first tropical salsa singer to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He opened that concert with his version of "Represento," composed by Lou Briel, and the performance was recorded live and later released as an album. During the show, he added an unscripted four-minute extension to "Perdoname," a moment that demonstrated his improvisational ability so memorably that the song became the closing number of his subsequent concerts, with Santa Rosa committing his own improvised lines to memory for future performances.

In 1990, Santa Rosa joined the all-star "La Puertorriqueña" project alongside Andy Montañez and received the Billboard Lo Nuestro Award for Best Male Singer. That same year he appeared in the stage comedy La pareja dispareja alongside Luis Vigoreaux and Rafo Muñiz. In 1995, he traveled to Japan as Puerto Rico's Good Will Ambassador, performing "De cara al viento" in Spanish for Japanese audiences while the record label translated the songs into Japanese. The following year brought the release of the greatest hits album Caballero de la Salsa, Vol. 2, and his participation in the first Festival Presidente in the Dominican Republic. In 1997, he performed with Andy Montañez at Lincoln Center in New York City and later that year appeared with Olga Tañón at the Universal Studios Amphitheater in Hollywood, California.

Santa Rosa's recording output continued steadily into the 2000s with albums including Expresión, featuring the single "Fulana"; Romántico in 2001; Viceversa in 2002; and Auténtico in 2004. He also took on a personal mission to preserve the legacy of the late Tito Rodríguez, acquiring memorabilia including clothing, music, and furniture from Rodríguez's Puerto Rico home. Santa Rosa organized tribute concerts and dances in Rodríguez's honor and recorded a duet with him using modern technology, singing "En la soledad," composed by Puchi Balseiro. In February 2003, he staged a two-night concert at the Center of the Performing Arts in Caguas, Puerto Rico, displaying his Rodríguez memorabilia collection in the lobby as part of the event.

Santa Rosa also played a significant role in the career of Víctor Manuelle, whom he discovered and mentored. The two released a joint live album, Dos soneros, una historia, in late 2005. In 2006 he released Directo al corazón, and in 2007 he performed at Plaza Colón in Santo Domingo and released Contraste, whose single "Conteo regresivo" spent sixteen weeks at the top of Billboard's tropical chart. The album received Gold and Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America in June 2008, with sales exceeding 1,500,000 copies. On February 9, 2008, Santa Rosa performed at an event called "Concierto del amor" at Madison Square Garden. That July he became the first salsa singer to perform at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, with the sold-out event drawing an audience of 2,000. His June 28, 2008, concert at the Caupolicán Theatre in Chile was his first performance in that country and drew approximately 8,000 attendees.

In 2012, Santa Rosa appeared in the comedy film La nena se casa... en Navidad, playing the role of a father navigating his daughter's wedding. The following year he appeared on Broadway in Forever Tango. He also performs a musical comedy club act called Cantando y Contando alongside Chucho Avellanet throughout Puerto Rico.

Santa Rosa participated in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games on July 17, 2010, and as of that year held the record for the most number-one albums on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart. In 2017, he contributed to Lin-Manuel Miranda's single "Almost Like Praying," a collaboration featuring multiple Latin artists whose proceeds benefited the Hispanic Federation's Hurricane Relief Fund for those affected by the hurricane that struck Puerto Rico. On July 25, 2025, he performed alongside Bad Bunny during the No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí concert residency, singing "Baile Inolvidable" and "La Agarro Bajando."

Among his honors, Santa Rosa received the ASCAP Latin Heritage Award in 2002 and a special award at that year's Lo Nuestro Awards. On September 28, 2008, Union City, New Jersey, presented him with the key to the city and a star on the Walk of Fame at Celia Cruz Park. In 2021, he received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Santa Rosa is married to Alexandra Malagón.
