About
Gertrude Norman was an English-American actress whose career spanned stage, silent film, and sound film across several decades. Born in London, England, on May 19, 1848 or 1851, she lived to July 20, 1943, and remained professionally active well into her eighties.
Norman's Broadway career ran from 1899 to 1907 and included appearances in four plays: Hedda Gabler, Francesca da Rimini, In the Palace of the King, and Becky Sharp. These productions placed her among the working stage performers of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras in American theater.
Her transition to film resulted in credits spanning from 1911 to 1936, with 44 films attributed to her. Beyond performing, Norman also worked as a screenwriter and director during the early silent film period. Among her screen roles was a maternal part in The Birth of a Nation. One of her films from 1910 was recovered in the 2000s after being found in a sea chest. Norman appeared in four films with recorded sound, having made her first talkie while already in her eighties, in which she played a grandmother. This longevity made her one of the oldest actresses to have worked across both the silent and sound eras of cinema.
Norman is a distinct individual from two contemporaries who shared her name: Gertrude "Toto" Norman, born around 1880 and died in 1961, who was an actress and served as secretary and companion to opera singer Marcia Van Dresser, and a separate Gertrude Norman known as a children's book author.
