About
Gertrude Bondhill (December 12, 1879 – September 15, 1960) was an American actress whose career spanned stage and film across several decades. Born in the late nineteenth century, she built her professional foundation in live theatre before transitioning to motion pictures during the silent film era.
Bondhill's early stage work included a tenure with the Poli Players, a theatre troupe based in Washington, D.C., where she performed prior to 1912. Her work during this period drew notable attention: in 1913, President Woodrow Wilson wrote to her personally to commend her portrayal of Salomey Jane. Her stage career extended across multiple productions, including Sweet Clover in 1904, St. Elmo in 1922, and The Sweetest Girl in Dixie, also in 1922.
Her film work concentrated largely in the 1910s, during which she appeared in both short and feature-length silent productions. Among her short films were The Visiting Nurse, The New Editor, Two Lives, and The Warrant, all from 1911, as well as The Grey Wolves that same year, in which she played Leona Manley. She appeared in several short films in 1915, including Love's Probation as Myrtle Colwell, Love's Old Sweet Song as Stella, and Hilary of the Hills in the title role. Her feature film credits included The Sins That Ye Sin (1916), The Unborn (1916) as Nancy Lee, and The Awakening of Bess Morton (1916) as Bess Morton. She is particularly associated with silent films directed by Otis B. Thayer, including Miss Arizona (1919), in which she played Arizona Farnley.
Bondhill's Broadway career included her 1935 appearance in Mulatto, the play by Langston Hughes, in which she originated the role of Grace Richards.
