About
Geraldine James Thomas was born on 6 July 1950 in Maidenhead, Berkshire, the daughter of Gerald Trevor Griffith Thomas, a cardiologist, and his wife Annabella Doogan. After failing her 11-plus exam, she attended Downe House School in Newbury, Berkshire, where she was known as Gerry Thomas. At school she adopted the surname Vaughan-Thomas, finding her own surname too plain, and her professional stage name draws on her middle name, James. She trained at the Drama Centre London, and upon graduating spent three years working in repertory and school theatre before building a career across stage, television, and film.
James made her Broadway appearances between 1989 and 2009, with credits including Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice. Her stage work in The Merchant of Venice saw her play Portia opposite Dustin Hoffman, a production that transferred from London to Broadway. Her Broadway performance earned her the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play in 1990. Her stage work has also included Hedda Gabler at the Royal Exchange in Manchester in 1993 and the role of Rosalind in As You Like It at the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2023.
On British television, James first gained wide recognition playing Sarah Layton in the 1984 Granada series The Jewel in the Crown. Subsequent television roles included Rosemary Garrity in Band of Gold, which ran from 1995 to 1997, and Gloria Green in The Sins in 2000. She appeared in a cameo role as the mother of Harvey Pincher in Little Britain in 2004. Later television work included the role of Milner in Utopia in 2013, Chief Constable Carolyn Jarecki in Black Work in 2015, and Mayor Ruth Jahns in the Apple TV+ series Silo in 2023. From 2017 to 2019 she starred as Marilla Cuthbert in the Netflix adaptation Anne with an E.
Her film career spans several decades. Early credits include the role of Mirabehn in Gandhi in 1982 and appearances in The Tall Guy and The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, both in 1989. She played Mrs. Hudson in Sherlock Holmes in 2009 and reprised the role in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011. Additional film credits include Alice in Wonderland in 2010, in which she played Lady Ascot, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2011, 45 Years in 2015, Rogue One in 2016, and the 2019 Downton Abbey film, in which she portrayed Queen Mary. She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her work in the television film She's Been Away.
In 2020, James contributed spoken-word vocals to the track "All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World" on the album Human. :II: Nature. by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2004. James is married to actor and director Joseph Blatchley, and they have a daughter.
