About
Gerald Oliver Smith (June 26, 1892 – May 28, 1974) was an English-born actor who built a career spanning stage, film, and television across several decades, working primarily in the United States. He was born in Sidcup, Kent, England, and began his performing life as a music hall singer in London before transitioning to acting.
Smith arrived in the United States as a member of a London Gaiety Company production of To-night's the Night. His Broadway career launched in 1916 and continued through 1934, during which time he appeared in a range of productions including The House of Silence, I Want My Wife, Strange Orchestra, The Red Cat, and the musical Pardon My English. Among his Broadway credits were three musicals with music by George Gershwin: Lady Be Good, which opened in 1924, Oh, Kay! in 1928, and Pardon My English in 1933.
Alongside his stage work, Smith took on bit parts in silent films, including The Mysterious Miss Terry in 1917. He transitioned into sound films in the 1930s, beginning his Hollywood career in 1937. He became a recognizable presence in supporting roles, frequently cast as a genteel butler or pompous English gentleman. His film appearances included Casablanca, National Velvet, and One Hundred Men and a Girl, and over the course of his screen career he appeared in more than one hundred movies, often in small roles that went uncredited.
From 1952 to 1956, Smith made several television appearances. Late in life he retired to the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital. He died on May 28, 1974, in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 81, and is buried at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, Los Angeles.
