About

Gerald Marks (October 13, 1900 – January 27, 1997) was an American composer of popular music and Broadway musicals, born in Saginaw, Michigan. His career spanned decades and encompassed both the popular song market and the theatrical stage.

Marks is most closely associated with "All of Me," a song he co-wrote with Seymour Simons in 1931. The composition went on to be recorded approximately 2,000 times, making it one of the most covered songs of the twentieth century. Its success brought Marks into membership with ASCAP, the performing rights organization with which he maintained a long association, including service on its board of directors from 1970 to 1981.

Beyond "All of Me," Marks contributed songs to other prominent projects. He wrote "That's What I Want for Christmas" for the film Stowaway, which starred Shirley Temple, and co-wrote "Is It True What They Say About Dixie?," a song that was recorded by both Al Jolson and Rudy Vallee.

On Broadway, Marks composed the music for two musicals: Hold It! and My Dear Public. These credits established him as a working presence in the theatrical community alongside his career in popular songwriting.

Marks was married to Edna Berger, a newspaperwoman and labor organizer. She died before him. He lived to the age of 96, passing away on January 27, 1997.
