About

Gerald Harper (15 February 1929 – 2 July 2025) was an English actor born in Barnet, Hertfordshire, who built a career spanning theatre, television, film, and radio over several decades. He is perhaps best remembered for his television work, particularly his title-role performances in the BBC series Adam Adamant Lives! (1966–67) and Hadleigh (1969–76).

Harper was educated at Haileybury and initially intended to study medicine at Cambridge University, having also completed two years of national service in the Royal Artillery as a second lieutenant. He ultimately abandoned the medicine course and auditioned successfully for RADA. His early stage work took him to the London Arts Theatre and Liverpool Playhouse before he returned to London to appear in Charley's Aunt alongside Frankie Howerd.

His Broadway career ran from 1958 to 1965, during which he appeared in Boeing-Boeing, King Henry V, Hamlet, and Twelfth Night. The classical stage work was undertaken with the Old Vic company, with whom he also toured the United States. Originally from London, England, Harper maintained a strong connection to classical theatre throughout his life, later playing Iago at the Bristol Old Vic and Benedick at the Chichester Festival Theatre. London stage credits included Crucifer of Blood at the Haymarket Theatre, as well as House Guest, A Personal Affair, Suddenly at Home, and Baggage. He also had roles in Free as Air and Ross, and toured the United Kingdom in 2008 as the lead in Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, directed by Joe Harmston for producer Bill Kenwright. At Chichester Festival Theatre he played one of the barristers in The Baccarat Scandal, which starred Keith Michell. His directorial work included a production of Blithe Spirit performed in Hebrew at the Israeli National Theatre.

Harper's film appearances included The Admirable Crichton (1957), A Night to Remember (1958), The League of Gentlemen (1960), Tunes of Glory (1960), The Young Ones (1961), The Punch and Judy Man (1963), The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968), and The Lady Vanishes (1979). His television credits extended beyond his two most prominent series to include The Sleeper, The Corsican Brothers, and Gazette.

In radio, Harper presented The Sunday Affair for Capital Radio during the 1970s and starred in the 1979 BBC radio serialisation of Prudence by Jilly Cooper, alongside Felicity Kendall. He hosted a series of Saturday afternoon programmes for BBC Radio 2 in the late 1980s and early 1990s, featuring classic songs and his signature opening line delivered over the introduction of the first song: "Hello....I'm Gerald Harper. Welcome to my Saturday selection." The format was revived for Talksport between 2002 and 2003 under the title Champagne and Roses.

Harper married actress Jane Downs in 1957; the marriage produced one child and ended in divorce in 1975. He subsequently married Carla Rabaiotti, a former Pan American air stewardess, in 1976, and that marriage also produced one child before ending in divorce in 1983. Harper died on 2 July 2025 at the age of 96, following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.
