About
Georgine Darcy (January 14, 1933 – July 18, 2004) was an American dancer, actress, and model born in Brooklyn, New York. She studied ballet and danced with the New York City Ballet before pursuing a career that spanned stage, film, and television.
Darcy appeared on Broadway between 1949 and 1952, with credits including the musical Of Thee I Sing and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She also worked as a model during this period of her career.
Her most widely recognized role came in 1954, when director Alfred Hitchcock cast her in Rear Window. Hitchcock selected her after seeing a publicity photograph in which she wore a black leotard and green feather boa; Darcy later recalled that she did not know Hitchcock at the time and did not consider herself an actress. In the film, she played an unnamed neighbor of protagonist L.B. Jefferies, portrayed by James Stewart, and her character was dubbed "Miss Torso." The character appeared practicing dance moves in a skimpy top and pink shorts with a 21-inch waistband, with costuming provided by Edith Head. Darcy was paid $350 for the role. During production, Hitchcock used her stated aversion to pumpkin pie as a tool to elicit a genuine adverse reaction for a scene involving a strangled dog, presenting her with the pie alongside what she described as crude jokes. On the final day of filming, Hitchcock and members of the cast presented her with a cake modeled after her figure. Hitchcock advised Darcy to acquire an agent and to study Anton Chekhov in Europe, suggesting he could make her a star upon her return; she did not follow either recommendation.
Among her subsequent film appearances, Darcy took on the role of Madge Albright in Don't Knock the Twist (1962), a film featuring Chubby Checker, in which her character was part of a brother-sister dance team. She also appeared in Women and Bloody Terror (1970) and The Delta Factor (1970).
On television, Darcy played dancer Dawn Dubois in a season five episode of The Danny Thomas Show and held a regular role as the secretary Gypsy in the 1960–61 sitcom Harrigan and Son, which starred Pat O'Brien and Roger Perry as a father-son pair of lawyers. She made guest appearances on M Squad, the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse, and Mannix.
Darcy was the subject of the 2004 documentary short Remembering Miss Torso, directed by Malcolm Venville. She died of natural causes that same year at the age of 71, survived by her husband of 30 years, actor Byron Palmer.
