About

George Edwards "Georgie" Price, born January 5, 1901, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City, was an American vaudeville singer, comic, and Broadway performer who also worked as a book writer for the stage. He died on May 10, 1964, in New York, at the age of 63.

Price began performing as a child in barrooms and streetcars before winning amateur competitions. At six years old, his talent made an impression on opera singer Enrico Caruso, who invited him to perform in a benefit concert for the family of a deceased police officer. By 1909, Price had become a vaudeville child star, introducing the Edwards-Madden song "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" in Gus Edwards' revue School Boys and Girls. During his early years on Broadway, he performed alongside child actress Lila Lee, who later became a well-known film actress. As a young performer in vaudeville, he was a contemporary of George Jessel, Walter Winchell, and Eddie Cantor, and as an adult professional he drew comparisons to both Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor. His theme song was "Bye Bye Blackbird."

Price's Broadway career spanned from 1922 to 1928 and included the musical Spice of 1922, the revue A Night in Spain, and the play The Song Writer, for which he also served as book writer. In March 1932, he appeared in the stage show at the Mastbaum Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, alongside Barto and Mann and Maria Gambarelli. He also appeared in Vitaphone shorts during the 1920s and 1930s.

A dispute with theatrical producer Jacob J. Shubert contributed to Price's departure from show business by the late 1920s. Shubert had hired Price with the promise of making him a major headliner but subsequently reneged on that commitment and declined to fulfill the financial obligations of Price's contract. Following this falling out, Price transitioned to a career as a Wall Street stockbroker and purchased a seat on the New York Stock Exchange.

Price was married three times. His first marriage, to Berenice Page, lasted from 1921 to 1927 and ended in divorce. His third marriage, to Catherine Alexandra Marshall, took place in 1942 and ended in divorce in 1963. Price had four children in total: sons Peter and George Marshall, and daughters Lisa and Mrs. John W. Larsen.
