About
George Michael Rosener (May 26, 1884 – March 29, 1945) was an American actor, director, composer, book writer, and playwright born in Brooklyn, New York. His career spanned the stage and screen, encompassing Broadway productions, film acting, screenwriting, and work in serial pictures.
Rosener's path to the stage began at age 19, when he started as a circus clown. He subsequently worked in tent shows, medicine shows, vaudeville, and stock companies before establishing himself as a professional stage figure. Over the course of his career he acted in or directed more than 200 plays and spent more than seven years working for the Shubert organization — the operators of the Broadway theater district — in the capacities of actor, director, and writer. He also served on the news staff of the New York World.
His Broadway career ran from 1923 to 1927 and included both plays and musicals. Among his stage credits were the plays If a Body, Speak Easy, and She Got What She Wanted, as well as the musicals Music Hath Charms and My Maryland. His 1927 play Speakeasy, co-written with Edward Knoblock, was adapted for film in 1929.
Rosener's work in film was extensive. He acted in 38 films and wrote 14 more, with credits including Doctor X, Union Depot, Sinners' Holiday, Alias the Doctor, The Secret of Treasure Island, City of Missing Girls, The Mysterious Pilot, The Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, House of Secrets, New Faces of 1937, The Carson City Kid, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, and The Great Commandment. In 1937 he both wrote and appeared in the Frank Buck serial Jungle Menace. His final film credit came in 1941.
His wife, Adele, died in June 1942. Rosener died on March 29, 1945.
