About
George Overton O'Dell, who performed professionally under the name George Ovey, was an American actor and comedian born on December 13, 1870, in Trenton, Missouri. His career spanned both stage and screen, and he became a recognized figure in American entertainment during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Ovey made his Broadway appearance in 1898, performing in the musical In Atlantic City. His screen career proved prolific, encompassing more than 200 film appearances between 1915 and 1951. He became particularly associated with a series of short comedic films produced in the mid-1910s by Mutual Films, in which he portrayed a character named Merry Jerry. These productions, directed by Milton Fahrney, were released under the banner of the Cub Comedies and represented the work for which Ovey became most widely recognized.
Ovey died on September 23, 1951, in Hollywood, California.
