About

George Marion, Jr. (August 30, 1899 – February 25, 1968) was an American screenwriter, lyricist, and librettist born in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was actor and director George F. Marion. Marion died in New York, New York from a heart attack.

Marion built an extensive career in Hollywood, contributing to 106 films between 1920 and 1940. His work in the silent film era established him as a highly regarded title writer. Director Billy Wilder, speaking to Hollywood oral historian Max Wilk, described Marion as the most sought-after title writer of the period, noting that producers would bring him completed pictures — sometimes without yet knowing whether the material was a comedy or a drama — and rely on Marion's titles to define the film's tone and genre.

In 1929, Marion and his wife appeared as witnesses in the U.S. District Court trial of income-tax adviser J. Marjorie Berger in Los Angeles. Marion testified that he had signed his tax return without reading it. His wife testified that, at Berger's suggestion, she had created two cash books containing a mixture of fictitious and accurate entries.

Marion's Broadway work spanned multiple productions, including Beat the Band, Allah Be Praised!, Early to Bed, Marinka, and Toplitzky of Notre Dame. For the 1943 musical Early to Bed, he wrote lyrics to music by Thomas "Fats" Waller. In 1945, working alongside Karl Farkas, Marion wrote the libretto for Marinka, an operetta composed by Hungarian composer Emmerich Kálmán.
