About
Born December 17, 1928, in Fairfield, Alabama, George Smith Lindsey was the son of George Ross Lindsey and Alice Smith. He studied biology and physical education at Florence State Teachers College, then served three years in the Air Force before relocating to New York. There he trained at the American Theatre Wing and worked as a comedian. In the 1960s, he gained wide recognition playing Goober Pyle on "The Andy Griffith Show." He married Joyanne Herbert; the couple later divorced. He is survived by his companion, Anne Wilson, his two children, and his two grandsons. Film credits include "The AristoCats," "Robin Hood," "The Rescuers," "The American Snitch," and "Hellp." Television credits include "Mayberry R.F.D.," "Hee Haw," "M*A*S*H," "The Twilight Zone," "The Andy Griffith Show," "Gunsmoke," "Death Valley Days," "Fantasy Island," and "To Tell the Truth."
