About

George LeMaire, born Meyer Goldstick on December 22, 1884, in Fort Worth, Texas, was an American comedian, lyricist, vaudeville performer, and Broadway entertainer whose career spanned stage, screen, and production work. He was the brother of Rufus LeMaire.

LeMaire built his early reputation in vaudeville as a comedian, working primarily as a straight man in comedy duos. Among his partners were Eddie Cantor, Joe Phillips, and Louis Simon. This foundation in vaudeville comedy informed his subsequent work on Broadway, where he performed in a range of productions between 1913 and 1926.

His Broadway credits included appearances in the musicals The Dream Girl, in which he played the role of William Addison, and Sweetheart Time. He also performed in the revues Ziegfeld Follies of 1918, Gay Paree in 1926, and George LeMaire's Broadway Brevities of 1920, as well as George White's Scandals of 1922.

Beyond performing, LeMaire extended his work into film and production. He served as a director and producer for Pathé and contributed as a writer to several films, including Blockade and Taxi 13, both from 1928. He appeared in a number of short films in 1929 and 1930, among them At the Dentist's, Dancing Around, The Plumbers Are Coming, What a Day!, Barber's College, A Tight Squeeze, and The New Waiter, the last of which was billed as a George LeMaire Comedy. He also received a writing credit on The Seventh Commandment in 1932.

LeMaire died on January 20, 1930, from a heart attack at his studio in New York.
