In 1985, Hearn starred as Long John Silver in an Edmonton production of Pieces of Eight, a musical adaptation of Treasure Island with music by Jule Styne, though the production was never staged again.

Hearn went on to originate the role of Max von Mayerling in the Broadway production of Sunset Boulevard, for which he won his second Tony Award, this time for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 1995.
