About
George Gerdes (February 23, 1948 – January 1, 2021) was an American singer-songwriter and character actor born in Queens, New York City. Before completing his studies at Carnegie Mellon University in 1969, he formed a musical group called the Alumicron Fab Tabs alongside friend Loudon Wainwright III.
In the early 1970s, Gerdes recorded two albums for United Artists Records: Obituary and Son of Obituary. The second of these was produced by Nik Venet and featured session musicians Charlie McCoy and Kenny Buttrey. His songwriting drew praise from Joni Mitchell and Terre Roche, among others.
Beginning in the 1980s, Gerdes took on acting work to supplement his income from performing. His stage career included two Broadway productions: Sam Shepard's Fool for Love and Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men, the latter of which he appeared in during its 1989 run. His screen credits spanned several decades and included roles in The Squeeze (1987), Miami Vice (1987), Single White Female (1992), Amistad (1997), Hidalgo (2004), and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011).
Gerdes died from a brain aneurysm in Glendale, California, on January 1, 2021, at the age of 72.
