About
George Fawcett (August 25, 1860 – June 6, 1939) was an American stage and film actor born in Alexandria, Virginia. A graduate of the University of Virginia, he initially pursued a career in law before turning to the stage as a Shakespearean actor.
Fawcett established his own acting troupe, the Fawcett Stock Company, and maintained an active presence on Broadway from 1897 to 1932. His stage work included appearances in Ghosts (1905) alongside Mary Shaw, The Squaw Man (1905) with William Faversham, and Getting a Polish (1910) with May Irwin. He took the role of Inspector Cochrane in The Law of the Land, a hit production that ran during the 1914–1915 season at the 48th Street Theatre. Among his other Broadway credits were A Man's Friends, Peacock, The Mountain Man, and The Wren. He starred in The Great John Ganton, which featured a then-emerging Laurette Taylor in its cast, and he returned to that production in 1930 for a staging at the Vine Theater in Los Angeles.
Fawcett made his film debut in 1915 in The Majesty of the Law and went on to appear in 151 films between 1915 and 1933, working primarily in the silent era. He also directed films during that period. He was married to actress Percy Haswell, and the couple had one daughter. Fawcett died in Nantucket, Massachusetts, on June 6, 1939.
