About

Grover Alan Cleveland, known professionally as George Cleveland, was born on September 17, 1885, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. Over the course of a show business career spanning 58 years, he worked as an actor, producer, and director, accumulating credits across stage, film, and television before his death on July 15, 1957, in Burbank, California, at age 71.

Cleveland's earliest stage work began in his teenage years, when he appeared in The Octaroon. He subsequently built a career in vaudeville, where he met Victory Bateman, an actress who was 20 years his senior. The two married in 1910 and remained together until 1926. His vaudeville experience eventually led him to Broadway, where he appeared in the 1927 play Honor Be Damned. Cleveland later relocated to Hollywood in 1936, transitioning his career primarily to film.

Between 1930 and 1954, Cleveland appeared in more than 180 films, taking on roles across a wide range of productions. Despite this extensive filmography, he acknowledged that his most recognized work came not from film but from television. He portrayed George "Gramps" Miller in the American television series Lassie, appearing throughout the show's first three seasons from 1954 to 1956 and in the first 12 episodes of the fourth season in 1957. Following his death in July 1957, his passing was incorporated into the 13th episode of that fourth season, with the storyline using the loss of his character as the reason for the Miller family selling their farm and departing for Capitol City.

Cleveland died of a heart attack and was survived by his second wife, Dorothy Melleck, whom he had married in 1955 as a widower.
