About

George Carney was a British comedian and character actor born in Bristol on 21 November 1887. Before entering the entertainment industry, he held a series of working-class occupations, including a position at the Liverpool Cotton Exchange, work in a furniture business, and a stint in the Belfast shipyards.

Carney made his first stage appearance in 1906 in a pantomime in Nottingham. His London debut followed in 1907, when he performed as one half of a double act with a partner named Armstrong, billed as Carney and Armstrong. The duo toured extensively, taking their act to audiences in Britain, Australia, and South Africa. Carney subsequently partnered with comedian Sam Harris to produce revues before transitioning to solo work on stage from 1926 onward. His solo material included sketches such as "The Fool of the Force," "The Stage Door Keeper," and "I Live in Leicester Square."

In 1931, Carney brought his talents to Broadway, appearing in the play The Good Companions. His career later expanded into British cinema, where he became a recognizable character actor. Among his film appearances were Love on the Dole in 1941 and Brighton Rock in 1948. He was the uncle of actor Leonard Williams. Carney died in London on 9 December 1947.
