About

George C. Boniface (November 3, 1832 – January 3, 1912) was an American actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1866 to 1911, a professional life of roughly sixty years that began with his stage debut in Baltimore in 1851.

Boniface's Broadway work encompassed both plays and musicals across several decades. One of his most prominent early roles was Rodolphe in the original 1866 production of The Black Crook, a credit that became among the most recognized of his career. He also starred in Under Cover, Paul Clifford, and The Twelve Temptations, and appeared in additional productions including the musical The Orchid and the play Trelawny of the "Wells." In 1901, he took on the role of Dr. Steinart in The Climbers at the Bijou Theatre. Among his later appearances was a New York engagement in 1909 alongside Ethel Barrymore in Mid-Channel.

Boniface was married to his first wife, Margaret Newton (1840–1883), with whom he had four children: Stella Weaver, Symona Boniface, John D. Boniface, and George C. Boniface Jr. Three of the four children — Stella, Symona, and George Jr. — pursued careers as actors in their own right.
