About

Geoffrey Louis Owens is an American actor, educator, and theater director born on March 18, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Major Owens, worked as a librarian before serving in the New York State Senate and later the United States House of Representatives. His mother, Ethel, née Werfel, was a teacher of music and literature. Owens has two brothers and two half-siblings from his father's second marriage. He attended the High School of Performing Arts for one year before going on to graduate cum laude from Yale University in 1983.

Owens made his television debut in 1985 on the second season of the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show, playing Elvin Tibideaux, the boyfriend of Sondra Huxtable. The character married Sondra and became a series regular in 1987, remaining on the show until its conclusion in 1992. His film debut came in 1994, when he appeared as Lou in Ron Howard's The Paper. In 1994, he appeared in the romantic comedy Play the Game alongside Paul Campbell, Andy Griffith, Doris Roberts, Liz Sheridan, Marla Sokoloff, and Juliette Jeffers. In 2019, he starred as a police detective in Impossible Monsters, and in 2020 took a supporting role in Power Book II: Ghost. He also appeared in the films Fatale in 2020 and Hide and Seek in 2021, and in 2025 played the role of Daryl in the Netflix holiday film A Merry Little Ex-Mas.

On television, Owens appeared as himself in multiple episodes of the FX sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia beginning in 2007, recurring across seasons three, seven, and fifteen. His other television credits include a guest role as Eddie's father in a 2007 episode of That's So Raven, an appearance on the season premiere of NBC's Las Vegas that same year, a role as a court-appointed mediator on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager in 2010, and a part in the ABC drama FlashForward. He subsequently appeared in The Slap on NBC in 2015, an episode of the FOX drama Lucifer in 2017, and a season six episode of Elementary in 2018. That same year, photographs of Owens working at a Trader Joe's were published by The Daily Mail and widely described as an act of job shaming, a characterization Owens himself endorsed. The resulting attention led him to leave the position, and producer Tyler Perry subsequently offered him a ten-episode role on The Haves and the Have Nots. He also booked a guest-starring role on NCIS: New Orleans following that period. In 2024, Owens publicly discussed ongoing career and financial difficulties.

His stage work spans Broadway and regional theater from 1986 to 2013, with credits including Romeo + Juliet, Macbeth, and As You Like It. In 2011, he portrayed Casca in the Shakespeare Theatre Company's Free-For-All production of Julius Caesar. Owens is the founder and artistic director of The Brooklyn Shakespeare Company and has taught acting and Shakespeare at Columbia University, Yale, the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, the Adult School of Montclair, and Pace University. He has also served as a guest teacher at universities, theaters, studios, and secondary schools throughout the New York metropolitan area, and has judged the National Shakespeare Competition semi-finals at Lincoln Center for at least 25 years.

Owens married Josette in 1995, and together they have one son.
