About

Geoffrey Forbes Lumsden (26 December 1914 – 4 March 1984) was a British character actor born in London, the son of Alfred Forbes Lumsden. He attended Repton School, where he was a contemporary of the writer Denton Welch. Both of his parents had died by the time he finished school, and he went to live with his uncle, training reluctantly as an engineer at a colliery. It was during this period that he first developed an interest in acting, organizing concerts for the colliery workforce. He subsequently won a scholarship to train at RADA while still employed there.

Lumsden married Judith Cope in 1938 and began working in repertory theatre before his theatrical career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in Burma. Following the war, he returned to the stage and also worked as a playwright. In 1947, he married Helen A. Syme at Cuckfield in Sussex. He wrote and starred in the 1958 West End farce Caught Napping, which was later revived in 1978 with a cast that included Arthur Lowe, Bill Pertwee, and Edward Evans. His stage work also included The Iron Duchess by William Douglas Home in 1957 and Aunt Edwina, also by Home, in 1959.

His Broadway career spanned 1962 to 1966. He appeared as Sir Francis Getliffe in The Affair at the Henry Miller Theatre in 1962, and as Major Hugh Beresford Maitland in Hostile Witness at the Music Box Theatre in 1966.

On television, Lumsden became best known for playing Captain Square in Dad's Army, the pompous commander of the Eastgate platoon of the Home Guard and rival to Captain Mainwaring. He frequently portrayed pompous upper-class figures and military officers throughout his career. His other television appearances included Rookery Nook, Upstairs Downstairs, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Edward & Mrs. Simpson, and Jack the Ripper, in which he played the editor of the Daily Telegraph. He also made two appearances in the BBC Television Shakespeare. His uncles were the first-class cricketers Oswald and William Lumsden.

Lumsden died on 4 March 1984 at Westminster Hospital in London from a coronary occlusion, at the age of 69.
