About

Geneviève Page, born Geneviève Bonjean on 13 December 1927 in Paris, France, was a French actress whose career in film and theatre spanned more than five decades. She died in Paris on 14 February 2025, at the age of 97. Her father, Jacques Paul Bonjean (1899–1990), was a French art collector who focused on 17th-century French art, and her mother, Germaine Bonjean (born Lipman), came from a Jewish family that had founded LIP. Among the figures present in her early life was her godfather, the designer Christian Dior, who at the time had not yet established his fashion house and would visit the family home, sharing meals and playing piano duets with her mother.

Page pursued performance from a young age, appearing in Alfred de Musset's work at the Théâtre National Populaire and later entering the Conservatory. Her formal education included studies at the École du Louvre and the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers. Her stage career began in 1943 with productions of Le Soulier de Satin and Oh! Les Beaux Jours, both directed by Jean-Louis Barrault for the Madeleine Renaud Company.

Her film debut came in 1951 with Pas de pitié pour les femmes, followed the next year by Fanfan la Tulipe (1952), in which she portrayed Madame de Pompadour opposite Gérard Philipe and Gina Lollobrigida. Page subsequently built an international screen career, appearing in Italian, French, British, and American productions. She co-starred with Robert Mitchum and Ingrid Thulin in Foreign Intrigue (1956), and with Dirk Bogarde and Capucine in Song Without End (1960). She appeared alongside Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren in El Cid (1961), and later in Grand Prix (1966) with James Garner. Director Luis Buñuel cast her in Belle de Jour (1967) alongside Catherine Deneuve, and the two actresses appeared together again in Mayerling (1968), in which Page played Countess Larisch in a cast that also included Ava Gardner and James Mason. Billy Wilder selected her for the role of the mysterious widow in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970), a character who uses her sexuality to manipulate Holmes. Her film work continued through Robert Altman's Beyond Therapy (1987) and extended until 2003.

Page brought her talents to Broadway in 1958, appearing in Lorenzaccio. Her theatre work continued across subsequent decades, including Les larmes amères de Petra von Kant in 1980, a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night under its French title La nuit des rois, La femme sur le lit in 1994, and Delicate Balance in 1998.

Page married Jean-Claude Bujard in 1959, and the couple had two children together. Bujard died on 29 August 2011.
