About
Genevieve Hamper (September 8, 1888 – February 13, 1971) was an American actress who worked in both stage and silent film. She began performing Shakespeare as a teenager and went on to build a career centered on classical theater, appearing on Broadway between 1911 and 1918.
Hamper's stage career was closely tied to her first husband, Robert B. Mantell, who was considerably older than she was. Together they co-led the Robert Mantell-Genevieve Hamper Shakespearean Repertoire Company, performing works that included Hamlet, Richelieu, The Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, and King Lear. The couple had a son, Robert B. Mantell Jr.
Alongside her stage work, Hamper appeared in a number of early silent films, including The Blindness of Devotion (1915), A Wife's Sacrifice (1916), Tangled Lives (1917), and Under the Red Robe (1923). She worked with Fox Film Corporation, where her credits included the role of Claire in The Green-Eyed Monster (1916).
Following Mantell's death, Hamper married actor John Alexander in October 1928 and stepped away from performing. In 1929, however, she returned to Shakespeare by directing her own company, which staged productions at venues such as the Metropolitan Theater in Minneapolis. She used her country estate, Woodcrest, located in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, as a rehearsal space. Her directorial philosophy favored restraint over theatrical excess, specifically reducing what she described as ranting and sonorous mouthing in character portrayals while preserving the core of each play. She believed audiences accustomed to film would respond more favorably to this measured approach.
Hamper died at the Sanger Nursing Home in New York City in 1971 at the age of 82. Her husband John Alexander survived her, dying in 1982.
