About

Gene Lyons (February 9, 1921 – July 8, 1974) was an American actor born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, whose career spanned Broadway, television, and film. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of police commissioner Dennis Randall on the NBC detective series Ironside, a role he held from 1967 until his death in 1974. A life member of The Actors Studio, Lyons accumulated credits across multiple decades in both stage and screen work.

His Broadway career began in February 1943 with This Rock, a short-lived production written by Walter Livingston Faust and produced by Eddie Dowling. That same year he appeared in Harriet, a run that continued into 1944. Over the following years Lyons accumulated seven Broadway appearances in total, including Death of a Salesman during the 1949–50 season, An Enemy of the People in 1950–51, and The Trip to Bountiful in 1953. He co-starred in Witness for the Prosecution for two years, from 1954 to 1956, and later appeared in Masquerade in 1958.

On television, Lyons established himself as a reliable presence across a wide range of genres. In 1953 he played a police detective on the CBS drama Pentagon Confidential, which was retitled Pentagon U.S.A. beginning with its second episode. The following year he appeared as Steve Rockwell on the CBS daytime drama Woman with a Past. His guest work extended across nearly two dozen series, including The Twilight Zone, Star Trek, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Gunsmoke, Have Gun – Will Travel, The Fugitive, Ben Casey, Bonanza, The Untouchables, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. In 1963 he appeared as Sheriff Jonathan Ballard in the episode "If You Have Tears" on the western series The Virginian. He also appeared on Raymond Burr's Perry Mason in the 1965 episode "The Case of the Wrathful Wraith" before joining Burr as a series regular on Ironside two years later. His film work included The Young Don't Cry and Kiss Her Goodbye.

Lyons died on July 8, 1974, in Los Angeles at the age of 53 from complications related to chronic alcoholism. He is buried at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
