About
Regina Theodora James, known professionally as Gee Gee James, was born in 1902 or 1903 and died in 1971. An African American actress and singer, she built her career primarily in radio and theater during the 1930s and 1940s, frequently being typecast in the role of domestic worker.
James began her performing career as a chorus girl before advancing to work as a soubrette. Following high school, she sang with Claude Hopkins' band, and in 1930 she appeared alongside George Wiltshire in Will Morrissey's Hot Rhythm. Her early radio work included a local station in Philadelphia, which led to her first network commercial, The Gibson Family, where she played a character named Mignonette. A 1935 profile by journalist Fay M. Jackson noted her strong voice and described her as a determined performer with pluck and persistence. A May 12, 1935 episode of The Gibson Family featured a wedding storyline for her character Mignonette, with the groom Theophilus played by Ernest Whitman and Hall Johnson's choir performing. She also played Tillie on The O'Neills and took on an eponymous role in Her Honor, Nancy James in 1939. A 1938 profile highlighted her portrayal of Tulip on Hilltop House, calling her one of the best-known radio actresses working at the time. In 1937 she performed comedy alongside Eddie Green on Louis Armstrong's radio program, and between 1940 and 1941 she voiced roles in three episodes of The Jack Benny Program.
James appeared on Broadway between 1938 and 1947. She was part of the original cast of Michael Drops In, written by William DuBois and opened December 27, 1938, playing the role of Hattie. The following spring she originated the role of Clementine in No Time for Comedy, which opened April 17, 1939. In 1943 she appeared as Another Maid in Three's a Family, which opened May 5 of that year. Her final Broadway credit was A Streetcar Named Desire, which opened December 3, 1947, in which she played the Negro Woman.
A March 1939 news article identified James as the wife of George Wiltshire and noted that the couple had a six-year-old daughter who also went by the name Gee Gee. Elva Diane Green, daughter of Eddie Green, later stated that James was subsequently married to Ernest Whitman, the actor who had appeared opposite her in The Gibson Family years earlier.
