About

Gay Seabrook, born Gladys Johnson on April 1, 1901, was an American actress whose work spanned Broadway, film, and radio. She died on April 18, 1970. Her father, Rufus Johnson, worked as a newspaper circulation manager. In 1920 she married screenwriter Edward E. Seabrook, whose surname she adopted professionally.

Seabrook's stage career began taking shape in the mid-1920s, when she was cast as Mary Margaret in the touring production of The Fool. That production had already run in New York before embarking on a United States tour lasting 62 weeks. Her partnership with comedian Emerson Treacy proved to be a defining chapter of her early career. The two first worked together in 1928, playing young lovers in a production of the play Tommy, and a newspaper account of that production identified them as among the foremost performers of youthful roles in the country. They subsequently formed the double act Treacy and Seabrook, which found considerable success in both theater and radio during the early 1930s. Their comedic dynamic drew comparisons to the husband-and-wife team of Burns and Allen.

Seabrook appeared on Broadway between 1935 and 1942, with credits including Crime Marches On and Three Men on a Horse. Her film work included appearances in the Our Gang short films Bedtime Worries and Wild Poses, in which she played the role of Spanky McFarland's mother. On radio, she was heard as Susabelle on The Park Avenue Penners and held a regular cast position on Meet Mr. Meek.
