About
Gavin MacLeod, born Allan George See on February 28, 1931, in Mount Kisco, New York, was an American actor whose career spanned six decades in theater, film, and television. He grew up in Pleasantville, New York, and earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from Ithaca College in 1952. His father, George See, an electrician who was part Chippewa (Ojibwe), died in 1945, and his mother, Margaret, worked for Reader's Digest. Following his graduation, MacLeod served in the United States Air Force before relocating to New York City, where he worked at Radio City Music Hall while pursuing acting opportunities. He adopted his stage name by combining "Gavin," drawn from a character in a television drama, with "MacLeod," the surname of his Ithaca drama coach, Beatrice MacLeod. In a 2013 interview with Parade, he explained that his birth name felt like an obstacle to his career.
MacLeod's Broadway career ran from 1955 to 1962 and included appearances in the drama A Hatful of Rain, The Captains and the Kings, and Copacabana. His stage work provided a foundation for a career that would extend broadly into film and television. His television debut came in 1957 on The Walter Winchell File, and his first film appearance was an uncredited role in The True Story of Lynn Stuart in 1958, followed shortly by a credited part in the prison drama I Want to Live!, starring Susan Hayward. Director Blake Edwards took notice of MacLeod and cast him in the 1958 pilot of the NBC series Peter Gunn, two guest appearances on the CBS series Mr. Lucky in 1959, and a supporting role in the comedy Operation Petticoat alongside Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. That film proved a turning point, leading to additional roles in Edwards productions including High Time with Bing Crosby and The Party with Peter Sellers.
His first regular television role began in 1962, when he was cast as Joseph "Happy" Haines on McHale's Navy alongside Ernest Borgnine, a part he held for two seasons. MacLeod later described the role as limited, noting that Haines had little dialogue and was sometimes positioned on set simply to obscure elements of the back lot. He departed the series to take the role of Signalman 2nd Class Crosley in The Sand Pebbles with Steve McQueen. Throughout the 1960s he accumulated guest appearances on numerous series, including Perry Mason, The Andy Griffith Show, Ben Casey, Hogan's Heroes, Ironside, and Hawaii Five-O, where he played a drug dealer called "Big Chicken" in two first-season episodes. In December 1961, a guest role on The Dick Van Dyke Show marked his first professional collaboration with Mary Tyler Moore.
MacLeod's most prominent television work came through two long-running series. As news writer Murray Slaughter on CBS's The Mary Tyler Moore Show, he earned two Golden Globe Award nominations and widespread recognition. He subsequently starred as Captain Merrill Stubing on ABC's The Love Boat, which ran for nine seasons between 1977 and 1986 and was broadcast in 90 countries. That role brought him three additional Golden Globe nominations. Among his regular co-stars were Bernie Kopell as Dr. Adam Bricker and Ted Lange as bartender Isaac Washington. Following the series, MacLeod became the global ambassador for Princess Cruises in 1986 and participated in launching ceremonies for many of the line's new ships. He celebrated his 80th birthday on February 28, 2011, aboard the Golden Princess in Los Angeles.
Beyond his two signature television roles, MacLeod appeared in several films during the 1960s and early 1970s, including The Sword of Ali Baba in 1965, A Man Called Gannon in 1968, The Thousand Plane Raid in 1969, and Kelly's Heroes in 1970. After The Love Boat, he toured with Michael Learned in Love Letters and performed in stage productions of Gigi and Copacabana between 1997 and 2003. In 2015, he starred in the play Happy Hour at the Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre in Rancho Mirage, California. He also appeared in two films by director Rich Christiano: Time Changer and the 2009 production The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry, in which he played the lead role.
MacLeod converted to evangelical Christianity in 1984. He and his wife Patti co-hosted a program about marriage called Back on Course on the Trinity Broadcasting Network for 17 years. In 1987, the two published Back On Course: The Remarkable Story of a Divorce That Ended in Remarriage, addressing his struggles with alcoholism and their earlier divorce and subsequent remarriage. In October 2013, he released a memoir, This Is Your Captain Speaking: My Fantastic Voyage Through Hollywood, Faith & Life, promoting it through television appearances and a national book tour. MacLeod also served as the honorary Mayor of Pacific Palisades for five years, a position he held until 2011. He died on May 29, 2021.
