About
Gaston Mervale, born Gaston Mistowski in Torquay, Devon, England in 1866, was an actor and director whose career spanned the stages of England, Australia, and the United States, as well as the early Australian film industry. He died in Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia in 1959.
Mervale began his career performing on stage in the United Kingdom before traveling to Australia in late 1897 to work for the prominent theatrical organization J.C. Williamson's. After that engagement he returned to England, then made his way to New York, where he performed on the Broadway stage between 1901 and 1914. His Broadway credits included Consequences, the musical The Darling of the Gallery Gods, the play Du Barry, and the play Manon Lescaut. In 1904 he made a further return to Australia, this time with the Tittell Brune Company.
Early in 1911, Mervale took on a new role behind the camera, directing a series of films for the Australian Life Biograph Company. That body of work featured actors Louise Lovely and Godfrey Cass and included One Hundred Years Ago, A Ticket in Tatts, The Colleen Bawn, A Tale of the Australian Bush, Hands Across the Sea, A Daughter of Australia, Conn, the Shaughraun, The Wreck of the Dunbar or The Yeoman's Wedding, and The Ticket of Leave Man, all produced in 1911 and 1912.
From 1912 to 1917 Mervale was based in the United States, where he continued acting on stage and in films and directed The Stubbornness of Geraldine in 1915. He returned to Australia in 1917 to produce plays, remaining active in that country's theatrical life. His career has been examined in the scholarly literature, including Veronica Kelly's article "Australia's Svengali: Gaston Mervale in Theatre and Film," published in Australasian Drama Studies in April 2011.
