Gary Wayne Menteer, born November 21, 1939, was an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter who worked across Broadway, television, and film. He died on January 18, 2016, in Rancho Mirage, California, at the age of 76, and was survived by his husband, Joseph Cvar.
Menteer made his Broadway appearance in 1957, performing in The Music Master. His screen career developed through the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, during which he appeared in television variety programs and films including Bye Bye Birdie, Hello, Dolly!, and Finian's Rainbow. His television credits from that period also include the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse and The Carol Burnett Show.
Menteer later transitioned into producing, earning two Primetime Emmy nominations in consecutive years. In both 1985 and 1986, he was nominated in the Outstanding Children's Program category for his work as a producer on Punky Brewster. In 1987, he moved into series creation, developing the FOX sitcom Boys Will Be Boys alongside David W. Duclon.
