Gary Mauer

Gary Mauer is an American theatre actor and lyric tenor whose Broadway career has included prominent roles in two of the longest-running musicals in the history of the form. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Mauer's Broadway work spans appearances in both The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables, with his database-verified credits on Broadway running from 1987 to 1992. In The Phantom of the Opera, he portrayed Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, a role he held from 1996 to 2001. His connection to that production deepened further when, from April 30 through May 19, 2007, he stepped in for Howard McGillin in the title role of The Phantom on Broadway. His other Broadway credit, Les Misérables, featured him as Enjolras, a role he performed from 1995 to 1996 and later reprised on tour.

Beyond Broadway, Mauer starred as The Phantom in the third national tour of The Phantom of the Opera, and in 1998 he played Gaylord Ravenal in the touring production of Show Boat. His regional theatre work includes playing Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, among numerous other productions.

Mauer has also built a recording career. He can be heard on the compilation albums Bravo Broadway and Broadway's Fabulous Phantoms, and in 2007 he released his own album, This Is the Moment, which includes "The Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera and "Bring Him Home" from Les Misérables. He has performed as part of the Bravo Broadway concert series with various symphonies throughout the United States. Mauer resides in New Jersey with his wife, actress Elizabeth Southard, and their two children, Nicholas and Eden.
