About

Gary Geld (October 18, 1935 – June 17, 2015) was an American composer, songwriter, author, publisher, and producer born in Paterson, New Jersey and raised in Clifton, New Jersey. He graduated from Clifton High School, where he won a songwriting competition, and went on to study composition at New York University and business at the Juilliard School.

Geld's professional partnership with lyricist Peter Udell defined much of his career. The two co-founded the Geld-Udell Music Corporation in 1959, followed by Geld-Udell Productions in 1962. Geld joined ASCAP in 1961. During the 1960s, he wrote and produced music for artists including Connie Francis, Brian Hyland, Jackie Wilson, Gene Pitney, and Skeeter Davis. Among his best-known popular compositions are "Sealed With a Kiss," "Ginny Come Lately," and "Let Me Belong to You."

Geld and Udell brought their collaboration to Broadway with three musicals. Purlie opened in 1970 and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical. Shenandoah followed in 1975, with Geld receiving a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score. The song "Freedom" from Shenandoah was performed at the rededication of the Statue of Liberty in 1989. The pair's third Broadway production, Angela, opened in 1978. That same year, Geld and Udell contributed songs to the musical dance revue American Dance Machine.

Geld died on June 17, 2015, in Manhattan Beach, California, at the age of 79.
