About
Garret Lee Dillahunt, born November 24, 1964, in Castro Valley, California, is an American actor whose career spans stage, television, and film. The middle of three brothers, he was raised in Selah, Washington, a suburb of Yakima. In late 1981, his older brother Eric died in a road accident near Ellensburg when the vehicle in which he was a passenger, driven by a drunk and speeding driver, left the road. After completing high school, Dillahunt enrolled at the University of Washington, graduating in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He subsequently earned an MFA in acting from New York University.
Dillahunt built his early professional foundation in theatrical productions, appearing on and off Broadway before transitioning to television and film. His Broadway work includes the play The Father and Inherit the Wind, with his first Broadway appearance occurring in 1996. Guest roles on series such as The X-Files and NYPD Blue preceded his breakthrough on the HBO drama Deadwood, where he portrayed two separate characters: Jack McCall in 2004 and Francis Wolcott in 2005. He returned to the series in an uncredited role as a townsman in the 2019 Deadwood film. A recurring role on USA Network's The 4400 followed, along with three seasons as Steve Curtis on ER from 2005 to 2006.
Subsequent television roles included Dr. Michael Smith on HBO's John from Cincinnati, the characters Cromartie, John Henry, and George Laszlo on Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Russian gangster Roman Nevikov on NBC's Life, and paralyzed serial killer Mason Turner on Criminal Minds. Dillahunt played Simon Escher in the Burn Notice third-season finale on March 4, 2010, reprising the role in the show's fourth and seventh seasons. From 2010 to 2014, he co-starred as Burt Chance on the Fox comedy Raising Hope, a performance that earned him a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. He began a recurring role on The Mindy Project in 2015 and on The Guest Book in 2017, and starred in the Amazon Studios drama Hand of God from 2014 to 2017. He joined the regular cast of Fear the Walking Dead in its fourth season as John Dorie.
In film, Dillahunt appeared in supporting roles in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, No Country for Old Men, Winter's Bone, Looper, and 12 Years a Slave, among other productions. He starred in the 2018 action film Braven, directed by Lin Oeding, playing Kassen, the leader of a group of mercenaries and drug runners targeting Joe Braven and his family.
In 2007, Dillahunt married actress Michelle Hurd, the daughter of actor Hugh Hurd.
