About
Galina Talva, born Galina Tzvetckoff, was a Russian-American ballet dancer and actress whose Broadway career spanned from 1947 to 1952. Raised in the Bronx as the daughter of a Russian émigré, she had a sister, Natasha Seeleman, who lived from 1921 to 2021.
Talva's stage work brought her into contact with prominent figures of mid-twentieth-century theater. She appeared on Broadway in Crime and Punishment alongside John Gielgud, and went on to take the role of Princess Maria in Irving Berlin's musical comedy Call Me Madam, which opened in 1950 and starred Ethel Merman. Talva sang on the original cast recording of that production.
In 1953, Talva married Leon Volkov, a colonel in the Soviet Russian Air Force who had defected to the United States. Following their marriage, she retired from performing. The couple had two children. Volkov later became Newsweek magazine's specialist on Soviet affairs and died on January 21, 1974. Talva herself died in 1968.
