About
Gaby Deslys, born Marie-Elise-Gabrielle Caire on 4 November 1881 in Marseille, France, was a French singer, actress, and dancer who achieved international prominence during the early twentieth century. Her stage name was a contraction of Gabrielle of the Lillies, chosen by Deslys herself for her professional career. Questions about her origins arose during her lifetime, with a private detective claiming she was a Czech peasant named Hadiwga Nawrati born in Horní Moštěnice, then part of Austria-Hungary. Deslys denied the claim, and in January 1930 the French foreign minister formally settled the dispute, confirming she had been born in Marseille as the daughter of Hippolyte Caire and his wife Mathilde, née Terras. The investigation concluded that the Czech family's claim rested on a case of mistaken identity involving a look-alike.
Deslys built her early reputation in dance halls across Paris and London, becoming proficient in multiple dance styles including the Ju-Jitsu waltz, the Grizzly Bear, the Turkey Trot, and ballroom dancing. The dance most closely associated with her name, The Gaby Glide, became her signature. By the 1910s she was earning $4,000 per week in the United States, equivalent to approximately $138,214 in 2025 dollars. Her Broadway career spanned 1911 to 1915, during which she appeared in four productions. In November 1911 she performed at the Winter Garden Theater in the musical Vera Violetta, the same month a performance at the Hyperion Theater at Yale University ended in a student riot over ticket prices of $2, with stagehands using fire extinguishers to restore order while Deslys retreated to her room. She went on to star in The Revue of Revues and appeared in the musicals The Honeymoon Express and The Belle of Bond Street. Her 1913 appearance in The Honeymoon Express placed her on stage alongside a young Al Jolson.
Deslys also pursued a recording career, committing two songs to phonograph in Paris in 1910. His Master's Voice released both "Tout en Rose" and "Philomène," and both recordings remain available. A third song, "La Parisienne," was recorded at the same session but rejected for an undisclosed reason and never released.
Her film work began in 1914 with Rosy Rapture, a short based on a play in which she had previously appeared in England, which included a scene featuring George Bernard Shaw. Her American feature debut came in 1915 with Her Triumph, produced by Famous Players-Lasky and presented by Daniel Frohman, in which she performed one of her celebrated dances alongside her partner Harry Pilcer. The film is now lost. Deslys made two additional French silent films in 1918 and 1919, both featuring Pilcer, before illness ended her career.
Her celebrity was amplified by widely reported gossip surrounding her relationship with King Manuel II of Portugal, which began when he was introduced to her during a visit to Paris in December 1909. Newspaper coverage across Europe and North America followed the pair, particularly after Manuel was deposed in 1910. In a published interview Deslys described performing at a concert in Lisbon at the king's invitation and characterized his gifts to her as modest. Their relationship cooled after she relocated to New York in the summer of 1911, and Manuel married in 1913, though Deslys maintained contact with his personal secretary, the Marquês of Lavradio. During the First World War, Deslys and Pilcer became a celebrated dance partnership, compared in prominence to the Castles, though whether the two ever legally married remains unclear.
Deslys contracted a severe throat infection as a complication of the Spanish influenza pandemic in December 1919. She underwent multiple operations in an attempt to eliminate the infection. She died in Paris on 11 February 1920 at the age of 38. Following her death, more than two dozen individuals bearing the surnames Navratil and Navrátilová attempted to claim her estate, a dispute that was not formally resolved until 1930.
