About

Gabriel James Byrne, born on 12 May 1950 in Walkinstown, Dublin, Ireland, is an Irish actor, book writer, and Broadway performer whose career has spanned stage, film, and television across more than four decades. The son of Dan Byrne, a soldier and cooper, and Eileen Byrne (née Gannon), a hospital nurse originally from Elphin, County Roscommon, he grew up in Dublin alongside five younger siblings. He attended Ardscoil Éanna secondary school in Crumlin and later studied archaeology, Spanish, and linguistics at University College Dublin, graduating with a BA in 1972. He subsequently completed a Higher Diploma in Education in 1973 and taught Spanish and history at Ardscoil Éanna before pursuing a career in the arts. Prior to acting, he also worked as an archaeologist and a cook. He spent five years training for the priesthood before concluding he did not have a vocation.

Byrne began his acting career on stage at the Focus Theatre and the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, later joining the Performing Arts Course at Roslyn Park College in Sandymount. He came to wider public attention through the final season of the Irish television serial The Riordans and its spin-off series Bracken. His feature film debut came in 1981, when he played King Uther Pendragon in John Boorman's Excalibur. He went on to appear in a substantial body of film work, including Defence of the Realm (1986), Lionheart (1987), Miller's Crossing (1990), Little Women (1994), Dead Man (1995), The Usual Suspects (1995), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), Enemy of the State (1998), End of Days (1999), Stigmata (1999), Vanity Fair (2004), The 33 (2015), and Hereditary (2018). He co-wrote The Last of the High Kings (1996) and served as a producer on In the Name of the Father (1993) through his production company Plurabelle Films, which held a first-look deal with Phoenix Pictures during the 1990s. In 1983, he appeared alongside Richard Burton, Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, and Ralph Richardson in the miniseries Wagner.

On television, Byrne earned two nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of therapist Paul Weston in the HBO drama series In Treatment, which ran from 2008 to 2010. He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 2008 for the same role. His other notable television credits include Vikings (2013), Maniac (2018), and War of the Worlds (2019–2022). He also wrote Draíocht, the first television drama in Irish, which aired on TG4 when the national Irish-language station began broadcasting in 1996.

Byrne's Broadway career spans from 2000 to 2022 and centers on several significant dramatic productions. He received a Theatre World Award in 2000 for his work on Broadway, and earned two Tony Award nominations for Best Actor in a Play — the first for Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten in 2000 and the second for O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night in 2016. His additional Broadway credits include A Touch of the Poet and Walking with Ghosts. The latter, a one-man show based on his memoir of the same title published by Grove Press in January 2021, premiered at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin on 1 February 2022, subsequently played at the Edinburgh International Festival, opened at the Apollo Theatre in London on 6 September 2022 marking his West End debut at age 72, and opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre on 26 October 2022. In 2008, he also appeared as King Arthur in a New York Philharmonic production of Camelot.

Beyond his performance work, Byrne has received recognition for his broader contributions to Irish culture. He was awarded an honorary degree by the National University of Ireland, Galway in November 2007, and received the Honorary Patronage of the University Philosophical Society of Trinity College Dublin in February 2007. At the fifth Jameson Dublin International Film Festival in 2007, he was presented with a Volta award for lifetime achievement in acting. The Irish Film and Television Academy presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. In 2020, The Irish Times ranked him 17th on its list of Ireland's greatest film actors, and in 2009 The Guardian named him among the best actors never to have received an Academy Award nomination.

Byrne has been married twice. He married actress Ellen Barkin in 1988, with whom he has two children; the couple separated in 1993 and divorced in 1999. He married Hannah Beth King on 4 August 2014 at Ballymaloe House in County Cork. As of 2021, he lives with his family in Rockport, Maine. He published an autobiography, Pictures in My Head, in 1994. In January 2011, he spoke publicly about having been sexually abused by priests during his childhood. He has described himself as an atheist and has been openly critical of the Catholic Church.
