About

G. Pat Collins, born George Percy Collins on December 16, 1895, in Brooklyn, New York, was an American actor who worked in both stage and screen throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Also known as George Pat Collins or Pat Collins, he built a career that spanned Broadway productions, silent film, and decades of Hollywood character work before his death on August 5, 1959, in Los Angeles at the age of 63.

Collins served in the United States Army during World War I before entering the New York theater scene. His Broadway debut came in November 1922 with The Bootleggers, a short-lived comedy staged at the 39th Street Theatre. Over the following sixteen years, he appeared in ten Broadway productions, including The Easy Mark, Marriage, The Racket, Ringside Seat, and The New Gallantry. His final Broadway credit came in 1938.

In 1922, the same year his stage career began, Collins married silent film actress Billie Rhodes, and the two remained married for the rest of his life. His screen career launched in 1928 with the silent film The Racket, starring Louis Wolheim, in which Collins had a featured role. It would be his only silent picture. Two years later he reunited with Wolheim in a featured role in All Quiet on the Western Front, the 1930 adaptation that became one of the landmark films of its era.

Collins worked steadily as a character actor in Hollywood from 1928 through 1958, accumulating more than 100 film appearances, frequently cast as police officers or military figures. After completing a small role in They Died With Their Boots On, he left the film industry and, at age 47, re-enlisted in the armed services for the duration of World War II. He returned to acting with a small part in the 1947 film Easy Come, Easy Go and continued taking supporting and minor roles through the end of his career. His final screen credit was The Sheepman, a 1958 Glenn Ford western.
