About
Frederick Combs (October 11, 1935 – September 19, 1992) was an American actor, playwright, and director who worked across theater, film, and television. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, he built a career that spanned multiple decades and mediums before his death in Los Angeles at the age of 56.
Combs made his Broadway appearances between 1960 and 1963, accumulating credits that included King Henry IV, Part II, Step on a Crack, and A Taste of Honey. His role as Geoffrey in A Taste of Honey, Shelagh Delaney's play produced by David Merrick, placed him alongside Joan Plowright and Billy Dee Williams during its 1960 Broadway run. He subsequently toured in the production, which starred Hermione Baddeley, through 1961. His Broadway work also included Franco Zeffirelli's 1963 staging of The Lady of the Camellias.
Combs is most closely associated with the role of Donald in Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band, which he originated on stage. He reprised the role in the 1970 film adaptation, a credit that remained central to his legacy. His television work included appearances on The Defenders, The Wild Wild West, Roots: The Next Generations, and The Users, along with the 1988 film David.
Combs died in Los Angeles in 1992.
