About
Freddie Roman, born Fred Kirschenbaum on May 28, 1937, was an American stand-up comedian, Broadway performer, and book writer who died on November 26, 2022, in Boynton Beach, Florida, at the age of 85. He was raised in Jamaica, New York, in the borough of Queens, and became widely recognized for his long association with the Borscht Belt comedy circuit.
Roman's introduction to performing came early. His uncle and grandfather were owners of the Crystal Spring Hotel in the Catskills, where he was given the opportunity to emcee on summer evenings at the age of 15. He developed his craft as a teenage comic at small resort venues before temporarily stepping away from entertainment to work alongside his father, a shoe salesman. Roman eventually became the proprietor of a ladies' shoe store before returning to show business.
His comedy career took him to major venues, including Caesars Palace on the Las Vegas Strip and Harrah's Atlantic City. Roman co-wrote and starred in Catskills on Broadway, a stage production that drew on his deep roots in Borscht Belt entertainment. His Broadway career spanned from 1979 to 1991 and also included appearances in Chicago and Shirley Bassey. A later staging of Catskills on Broadway is listed among his stage credits in 2003, alongside Sunrise Lakes Phase IV in 2010.
Roman held the position of dean of the Friars Club for an extended period. The organization amended its two-term maximum bylaw specifically to allow him to continue in the role, and he was ultimately succeeded by Larry King.
His television work included appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Stark Raving Mad, and 18 episodes of the Amazon series Red Oaks. He also served as a presenter at the 46th Annual Tony Awards. His film credits include Sweet Lorraine, Finding North, The Last Laugh, and Welcome to Kutsher's: The Last Catskills Resort, among others.
Roman resided in Boynton Beach, Florida, in his later years. His son, Alan Kirschenbaum, was a television producer who died in 2012.
