Fred J. Scollay (March 19, 1923 – November 3, 2015) was an American character actor whose career spanned Broadway, film, and extensive work in both daytime and primetime television.
Scollay was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and was one of four orphaned siblings. He was raised by Mr. and Mrs. James Murphy of Boston, Massachusetts. He pursued formal training in acting at Emerson College and at Bishop-Lee Dramatic School. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy as an aviator machinist mate.
His Broadway work included The Devil's Advocate, for which a production is recorded in 1961. In film, Scollay appeared in A View from the Bridge, Odds Against Tomorrow, and Stage Struck.
Scollay built a substantial television career beginning in the earliest years of the medium, with appearances on Studio One, Kraft Television Theatre, and Armstrong Circle Theatre. He went on to appear in Naked City, The Defenders, Dr. Kildare, and Gunsmoke, among numerous other primetime programs. His final recurring television role was as a judge on multiple episodes of Law & Order, a part he held from 1991 to 1996. He also appeared in television commercials and public service advertising.
In daytime television, Scollay was an original cast member of The Doctors, portraying hospital chaplain Reverend Sam Shafer from 1963 to 1964. From 1970 to 1971, he appeared on Somerset as Harry Wilson, also known as Ike Harding. Between 1977 and 1980, he played Charley Hobson on Another World, the last husband of Ada Lucas Davis, the character portrayed by Constance Ford. Additional daytime credits included Young Doctor Malone, The Edge of Night, Search for Tomorrow, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, and The Guiding Light.
Scollay died on November 3, 2015, in Hobe Sound, Florida. His wife, Ann, predeceased him.
