Born April 8, 1928, in New York City to Anna Evelyn and Harry Ebb, Fred Ebb attended New York University and Columbia University. During the 1950s he worked for songwriter Philip Springer. In 1963 he met John Kander, beginning a collaboration that would span nearly 40 years and yield a dozen musicals on Broadway.
Film credits include "Chicago," "Cabaret," "Funny Lady," and "Broadway: The Golden Age, by the Legends Who Were There." Television credits include "Liza with a Z," "Baryshnikov on Broadway," "Goldie and Liza Together," "Magnavox Presents Frank Sinatra," and "First You Dream: The Music of Kander & Ebb."
Among his other honors: Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Single Program - Variety and Popular Music ("Liza with a Z," 1973), Outstanding Special - Comedy-Variety or Music ("Gypsy in My Soul," 1976), and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music and Lyrics ("Liza Minnelli Live from Radio City Music Hall," 1993). He was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1998.
Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor on September 14, 2004.
