About
Francis Connolly Shannon was born on 27 July 1874 in Ireland and died on 1 February 1959 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 84. He is interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. Over the course of his career, Shannon worked as both an actor and a writer, building a body of work that spanned stage, silent film, sound film, and television.
Shannon entered the film industry as a silent film actor, making his screen debut in 1913 with The Artist's Joke. That same year he appeared in The Prisoner of Zenda, and he continued working in silent pictures through the mid-1920s, with credits including Monsieur Beaucaire in 1924. Alongside his film work during this period, Shannon maintained a presence on the stage, and his Broadway career extended from 1909 to 1934. His Broadway credits include Too Many Boats, Move On Sister, Fly By Night, Young Sinners, and The Web, among other productions.
Following his stage work in the early 1930s, Shannon returned to Hollywood in 1931. He took on several supporting roles in sound films, among them Captain McTavish in Warner Bros.' Torchy Blaine series, in which he appeared from 1937 to 1939. He is perhaps most widely recognized for his portrayal of the scientist Dr. Alexis Zarkov in three Flash Gordon serials starring Buster Crabbe, produced between 1936 and 1940. In his later years, Shannon transitioned to writing, contributing to Tales of the Texas Rangers from 1955 to 1958.
