About

Frank Hotaling (April 4, 1909 – April 13, 1977) was an American performer and art director born in New York City. His career spanned both the stage and the film industry, with work that extended across more than 100 productions.

Hotaling appeared on Broadway in 1928 in the play The Shanghai Gesture. His film career, which consisted largely of B movies, ultimately numbered over 100 titles, including Wyoming (1947) and The Dakota Kid (1951).

A professional relationship with director John Ford proved consequential to Hotaling's career. His work on Ford's 1952 film The Quiet Man earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction-Set Direction, Color, shared with collaborators John McCarthy Jr. and Charles S. Thompson. The recognition that followed expanded his opportunities in the industry. He subsequently contributed to Ford's The Searchers (1956), Delmer Daves' 3:10 to Yuma (1957), and William Wyler's The Big Country (1958).

Hotaling died on April 13, 1977, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California.
