About
Francis Patrick Grimes was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 9 March 1947, and went on to become an Irish stage and screen actor whose career spanned theatre, film, and television across several decades. He died on 1 August 2025, following a short illness, at the age of 78.
Grimes first came to prominence in 1967 through a stage adaptation of Brendan Behan's autobiography, Borstal Boy, at the Abbey Theatre, in which he played the young Behan. When the production transferred to Broadway in 1970, Grimes received a Tony Award nomination for best actor and earned the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance that same year.
His film career included a notable encounter with Italian director Franco Zeffirelli, who cast Grimes in the lead role of Francis of Assisi in the 1970 biographical film Brother Sun, Sister Moon. A disagreement between the two over the interpretation of the role led to Grimes being replaced by Graham Faulkner. His most significant film credit ultimately proved to be the role of Major Fuller in Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far, released in 1977.
In the early 1970s, Grimes relocated to London, where director Lindsay Anderson cast him in David Storey's play The Farm. The success of that production helped establish his standing in British theatre.
On Irish television, Grimes was widely recognized for his portrayal of Father O'Connor in RTÉ's drama series Strumpet City. In 1981, that performance earned him a Jacob's Award, cited specifically for his detailed and exceptionally convincing portrayal of the young priest. His later television work included a recurring role as Barry Connor in Coronation Street and an appearance in the Father Brown episode "The Mayor and the Magician" in 2013, in which he played Mrs. McCarthy's husband.
