About

Frank Albert Daniels (August 15, 1856 – January 12, 1935) was an American comedian, stage actor, and singer whose career extended from the late nineteenth century through the early twentieth century, encompassing Broadway productions, light opera, and silent film.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, to Balinda and Henry Daniels, Daniels was raised in Boston, where he pursued studies at a business school and the New England Conservatory of Music. His stage debut came in a production of Trial by Jury at the old Gaiety Theatre. He appeared in The Chimes of Normandy in 1879 and subsequently performed with the McCaull Comic Opera Company and other light opera organizations.

His New York career began to take shape in the 1880s. He played Old Sport in A Rag Baby in 1884, followed by Packingham Giltedge in Little Puck in 1888, a production based on F. Anstey's novel Vice Versa. In 1895 he took on two significant roles: Shrimps in Princess Bonnie and the title role in Victor Herbert's The Wizard of the Nile. Herbert's regard for Daniels led the composer to create roles specifically for him in The Idol's Eye in 1897 and The Ameer in 1899, the latter among Daniels's verified Broadway credits. Additional Broadway appearances included Miss Simplicity, The Tattooed Man in 1907, Bobby Burnit, The Belle of Brittany in 1909, The Pink Lady in 1911, and the burlesque Roly Poly. His Broadway career spanned from 1895 to 1922.

Alongside his stage work, Daniels established himself as a prominent figure at Vitagraph Studios, where he developed recurring screen characters including Captain Jinks, Kernel Nutt, and Mr. Jack. In 1919 he appeared in three films alongside Harold Lloyd: Count the Votes, Pay Your Dues, and His Only Father. His final film credit was Among Those Present in 1921.

Daniels died on January 12, 1935, in West Palm Beach, Florida, at the age of 78, survived by three children.
