About
Francesca Annis is an English actress born on 14 May 1945 in Kensington, London. Her father, Lester William Anthony Annis, and her Brazilian-French mother, Mariquita Purcell, were both occasional actors, and her mother also worked as a singer. When Annis was one year old, the family relocated to Brazil, where they remained for six years before returning to England. She has described her parents during that period as operating a nightclub on Copacabana Beach, with her mother performing as a blues singer. Back in England, Annis was educated at a convent school and trained as a ballet dancer in the Russian style at the Corona Stage Academy.
Annis began her professional acting career as a teenager, making her film debut in The Cat Gang in 1959. At sixteen, while still pursuing her ballet studies, she was cast as a handmaiden to Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra (1963). Her stage career gained early momentum when she was cast in one of the leading roles in the 1965 West End musical Passion Flower Hotel. She played Estella in a television adaptation of Great Expectations in 1967 and also presented children's television programmes during that period. Her performance as Lady Macbeth in Roman Polanski's 1971 film Macbeth drew considerable attention, particularly for the nude sleepwalking soliloquy. Subsequent film roles included the Widow of the Web in the science fantasy film Krull (1983) and Lady Jessica in David Lynch's science fiction adaptation of Dune (1984). She also appeared in The Debt Collector (1999) and The Libertine (2004).
On the stage, Annis built a substantial career with major theatrical institutions. She performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing Luciana in Trevor Nunn's musical production of The Comedy of Errors in 1976 and Juliet opposite Ian McKellen in Romeo and Juliet in 1977. In 1981, she appeared at the National Theatre as Natalya Petrovna in Peter Gill's production of Ivan Turgenev's A Month in the Country. She played Helen Alving in Ibsen's Ghosts at the Comedy Theatre in London from March to July 2001, and returned to the Comedy Theatre between September 2005 and January 2006 to star as Ruth in Epitaph for George Dillon alongside Joseph Fiennes. In April 2009, she starred as Mrs. Conway in Rupert Goold's National Theatre revival of J. B. Priestley's Time and the Conways.
Annis's Broadway career spanned from 1969 to 2017, during which she appeared in Hamlet and Children! Children!. Her stage work in Hamlet also had a notable London chapter: in 1995, she played Gertrude in the Almeida Theatre Company's production at the Hackney Empire, a run during which she began a relationship with her co-star Ralph Fiennes.
Her television work has been extensive. She portrayed Lillie Langtry in Edward the Seventh (1975) and reprised the role in the ITV serial Lillie (1978), for which she won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress in 1979. She has received six BAFTA TV Award nominations in total. Additional television credits include Madame Bovary (1975), Parnell and the Englishwoman (1991), in which she played Kitty O'Shea, and the police drama Between the Lines from 1993 to 1994. She starred in the miniseries Reckless (1998) and its 2000 sequel, Deceit, and appeared in the BBC costume drama Cranford (2007) alongside Michael Gambon and Judi Dench, playing Lady Ludlow. She also played Jacqueline Kennedy in Onassis: The Richest Man in the World (1988) and appeared in the 1980s miniseries I'll Take Manhattan. In 2015 and 2016, she played a leading role in the ITV drama Home Fires, and in 2025 she starred as Ann in The Forsytes, a period drama broadcast on Channel 5 in the United Kingdom.
In her personal life, Annis was in a relationship with photographer Patrick Wiseman beginning in 1974, and the two raised three children together: Charlotte, Taran, and Andreas. Her 23-year relationship with Wiseman ended in 1997 following the start of her relationship with Ralph Fiennes. Annis and Fiennes announced their separation on 7 February 2006, after eleven years together.
