About
Frances Eldridge was a stage and screen performer of the silent film era, born in Staten Island, New York City, to parents who were both stage actors. Her Broadway credits include The Red Poppy, which opened in 1922.
Eldridge began her career in stage acting, with early appearances in productions including The Bashful Hero with Ernest Truex, Lady Friends, Turn to the Right, and Johnny, Get Your Gun. She transitioned into motion pictures around 1920, working primarily on films produced on the East Coast before Hollywood became the center of the American film industry. Her first screen work was likely Madonnas and Men, produced by B. A. Rolfe at Peerless Pictures Studios in Fort Lee, New Jersey. She went on to appear in two additional Rolfe productions, Wings of Pride and A Good Woman, which led to her being cast by Henry MacRae in God's Crucible, also released under the title The Foreigner.
By late October 1920, Eldridge had signed with Superior Pictures Corporation to appear in two two-reel comedies per month, the first of which was The Little Liar. In November of that year she traveled to a motion picture exhibition in Atlanta, Georgia, alongside performers including Lillian Gish, and one day of the event was designated Frances Eldridge Day, concluding with a ball. By March 1921, however, she had filed a lawsuit against World Motion Pictures for failure to compensate her for her time and costumes in The Little Liar. In July 1921 she was reported to be weighing an offer to enter vaudeville.
Her final stage appearance before leaving acting was in The Red Poppy in December 1922, in which she played the role of Friquette alongside Bela Lugosi in his first appearance on the American stage. Eldridge subsequently departed for a tour of Europe. She returned to America and to the stage in 1925, appearing once again with Ernest Truex in Six Cylinder Love. Her screen credits also include The Little Outcast, The Half-Way Girl, and A Busy Cinderella.
