About
Fran Brill is an American actress and puppeteer born on September 30, 1946, in Chester, Pennsylvania, who grew up in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The daughter of a physician, Dr. Joe Brill, she developed an early interest in performance, appearing in summer stock theater at the age of 15. She later trained formally at Boston University College of Fine Arts.
Brill launched her professional career in theater, making her Broadway debut in 1969 with Red, White and Maddox, in which she portrayed a student leader. Her stage work extended well beyond that single credit, encompassing lead roles at prominent New York institutions including the Roundabout Theatre, Manhattan Theater Club, and Playwrights Horizons, as well as regional engagements at the Long Wharf, Yale Repertory Theatre, Arena Stage, the Mark Taper Forum, and the Actors Theatre of Louisville. The Drama Desk Award nominated her twice for her theatrical performances — once for What Every Woman Knows in 1976 and again for Knuckle in 1981.
Her television career began in earnest in 1974, when she joined the cast of the NBC daytime drama How to Survive a Marriage, playing Fran Bachman through 1975. The character navigated sudden widowhood, a storyline that prompted viewers to send Brill condolence letters. That same year she portrayed first lady Rachel Jackson in the NBC television production First Ladies' Diaries. She also appeared in episodes of The Guiding Light, All My Children, The Edge of Night, Lip Service, and Kate and Allie, and later guest-starred on nighttime dramas including Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Third Watch, and Against the Law. An animation credit came through a guest appearance as Elisa and Eliza Stitch on Courage the Cowardly Dog.
Brill joined Sesame Street in 1970 despite having no prior puppeteering experience. Over the course of her tenure, which lasted until her retirement from the show in 2014, she created and performed several Muppet characters, including Prairie Dawn, Zoe, Little Bird, and Betty Lou. Her work on the series earned her an Emmy Award. As Zoe, she appeared on The West Wing and in home video releases such as Zoe's Dance Moves. Her Muppet performance work also extended to Saturday Night Live, The Muppet Show, The Jim Henson Hour, Dog City, and the 1999 feature film The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland.
Her film appearances include the role of Sally Hayes in Hal Ashby's Being There (1979), Dana Mardukas in Martin Brest's Midnight Run (1988), and Lily Marvin in Frank Oz's What About Bob? (1991), along with credits in City Hall (1996) and additional titles spanning from Old Enough (1984) to Doug's 1st Movie (1999). In 2025, Brill received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 3rd Children's and Family Emmy Awards.
